Recall Cleanings

Two Types of Recall Cleanings

There are generally two types of recall cleanings in dentistry. The first being a procedure called a prophylaxis. This is when the patient’s teeth and gums are usually in a state of good health or minor gingivitis. The teeth are cleaned mostly above the gums to remove any plaque, calculus, or staining present.

The second type of recall cleaning is called periodontal maintenance. This is a recall status that a patient is on once periodontal therapy/scaling and root planing/ deep cleanings have been performed. It usually requires more time and care from our hygienists as they make sure no areas that were treated are becoming bad again.
